Three land games for kicking

Five minutes on the sofa or the floor helps legs remember what to do in the pool.

Four children kicking their legs on the poolside with their teacher

Strong, steady kicks come from long legs and floppy ankles. You can practise both without any water at all.

Sofa kicks: sit on the edge and kick slowly, with straight legs and pointed toes, for the length of a favourite song.

Tummy kicks: lie on the floor on your tummy, chin on your hands, and kick from the hips. Small splashes, not big bends.

Bicycle and stop: lie on your back, cycle your legs, then stop and float them still. It teaches control.
