It’s never too late, and the shallow end is a perfectly good place to start.

Hannah taught me in one of her evening classes, long before I taught anyone myself. A year after my first full length, I was training to be a teacher.

Most of my swimmers are grown-ups who feel a bit embarrassed to be starting now. I promise them three things: we stay shallow until they ask to move, nobody watches from the side, and every question is a good one. Some of my favourite swimmers took a whole term just to let go of the wall.

I also teach our older children in Stages 5 and 6, where it’s all about technique and stamina. Seeing someone swim a length without stopping still gives me goosebumps.
